About

Life is a mesmerising, twisting, and turning kaleidoscope of impossibilities. You are thrown into its depths naked and vulnerable with little hope of success or even honest survival. It is a precious thing that demands impossible decisions, where the deaths of others are the only thing that keeps your heart beating. It is a race, a battle, a never-ending bloodbath with no clear goal other than to keep breathing, breeding, and battling in a dance with no beginning or end.

My own journey has had its glimpses of joy and caresses of happiness, yet monstrous forces were at work so that a life that should have followed a decided course—birth, hope, school, disillusionment, marriage, career, despair, and death—faltered at the horrors around it and the narrow choices offered—which really were no choices at all, in a hellish landscape of exploitation, money, domination, power, bullying, war and destruction—and thus collapsed into existential despair at the fates offered in the world.

All the fractured weaknesses turned to the glug, glug, glug of liquid poison and boom! A life on a battlefield of meanness and narrowmindedness was wrecked, and death was the only destination. Out of the debris, a lost soul emerged as though re-awakened from a toxic nightmare. Only to see the world anew and discover within it a yearning to write.

Fantasy, the style of choice, not to peddle mere escapism from the ‘real world’ whatever the hell that is—though who doesn’t enjoy imaginings of a more heavenly domain? No, for me, it was and is a tool to explore the depths of human experience, to delve into the tragedies and horrors of our world—life’s shadow; but also offer a glimmer of hope, a vision of a world where magic and wonder are not impossibilities, but realities we can dare to embrace.

So, this is me, David S Lockwood, and this is my story: a tale of transformation and rediscovery, if not quite a happy ending. And with an occasional tap, tap, tap on the shoulder from the faerie lands for good measure. To remind me and hopefully others that, despite the plagues, wars, ignorance and madness, there is beauty in the world, and fantasy writing can help rediscover that.

Southern cemetery in Manchester is where my fantasy story begins and where over 400,000 rotting corpses lie and with them tales of Mancheter...
